Pool Services – Common Pool Problems and Concerns

Tags :

Pool Services

As cool as this could look for Halloween, don’t let it stay green too long! Regular cleaning is a must.

Pool Services

We’d like to take some time during the pool off-season to just brush up on some pool services information, refresh your memory on some things we’ve discussed in the distant past, and keep you up to date on pool services maintenance ideas, terms, and more. Today we’re going to talk about some of the most common problems pool owners come across, with brief explanations as to how the problem is addressed.

  1. Discolored water: Pool water can change color with a bunch of different causes. A hazy or cloudy pool can be caused by poor water circulation, problems with the filter, water balance issues, high alkalinity, low sanitizer level, calcium build up, high levels of total dissolved solids, and the presence of too much organic waste. Most of these issues are handled with adjusting the levels of chemicals and other such products, including shocking your pool.
  2. Green Water: Green water is a common problem, which means algae is growing in the pool. Shocking the pool can be a solution to this problem if you catch it early, but adding algae killers, scrubbing the walls and floor, and cleaning out the residue can also help. For extreme cases, acid washing may need to happen.
  3. Black spots: Black algae isn’t as common as their green relative. It’s much harder to get rid of and it appears in small patches, so it’s easy to miss. Purchasing and using special algae killer designed for that is your first level of defense.
  4. Pink growth: Bacteria growth like this is remedied with shocking the pool (usually twice) and then extra algaecide is used for 2 or more days.
  5. Yellow or green dust: Mustard algae can occur in some pools, and shocking your pool is the best way to remove it, with the addition of special algaecide designed to kill mustard algae after the shock.
  6. Correcting chlorine and pH levels: If your pool has too much chlorine, stop adding it until the levels balance out or add a neutralizer. For pH levels, you may need to adjust the chlorine levels, decrease alkalinity, or increase alkalinity. There are products available to fix all of those problems.
  7. Sudsy water: Too much algaecide can cause the pool water to start foaming. There are non-foaming brands out there, so switching to that and replacing some water in your pool can remedy this issue.
  8. Salty water: If your total dissolved solids levels are too high and your pool is salty, you need to drain the pool (up to half way) and replace the water.
  9. Water burns eyes or skin: If the pH levels of your pool are off (too high OR too low) it can cause irritation to the eyes or skin of swimmers. The culprit may also be an excess of sanitizer. Checking the levels of your pool regularly can help prevent this from becoming a regular problem.

Pool Services

Christmas is coming, and it may be time to start thinking about Christmas presents. If you have a pool owner on your list, we may have some ideas for gifts you can give them!

  1. Pay for Pool Cleaning Services: Even the most hands-on pool owner may want a break from the cleaning and chemical checking. Talk to us about paying for a pool services, pool cleaning for your loved one! Give them a week off of the regular cleaning and scrubbing and filter checking this holiday season.
  2. Pool Floats: A simple Google search will wield a ton of interesting pool floats! There are some simple floats made from high quality material, novelty ones shaped like pizza or other unusual shapes and colors, and there’s even unsinkable ones! You can also find ones for two or more people as well as child and pet friendly floats.
  3. Games and Toys: From floating houses and riders to basketball hoops and volley ball nets you can find cool games and toys for any pool owner.
  4. Entertaining guests: Some of the coolest pool accessories you could gift are the ones that will make party hosting so fun. You can find floating coolers, snack trays, speakers, and other accessories to help keep the fun going. You may even be able to find floating tables with umbrellas and card tables with water proof cards!
  5. Lights: You can find light shows and fun colored lights for nearly any pool style to take any post-sunset pool party to the next level!
  6. New cleaning equipment: As the years go by, cleaning tools haven’t changed a lot, but new brushes and nets or a replacement for the 10 year old pool vacuum may go over very well—especially if you can find something that’s a little fancier than the old equipment they had.
  7. Pool Side: From pool side tables and chairs to new serving trays to carry out snacks and refreshments, to a new umbrella for the pool-side table, anything that surrounds the pool can stand to be replaced or improved upon! Especially after years of being close to water (and probably splashed by children or grandchildren) and years in the summer sun.
  8. Protection: If you can afford a slightly more expensive gift, consider a new pool cover for your loved one. Improper storage of even the best pool cover can cause damage, so if you notice something wrong with their existing cover, a new one may make the perfect gift.
  9. Towels, suits, and more: Any swimming accessories could make great gifts and stocking stuffers. From new goggles to plush beach towels, you can never have too much swimming gear. The same goes for water wings for children or life vests for pets.

Pool Services – Indoor Pool : Perks, Care, and More

Tags :

Pool Services – Indoor Pool

Who doesn’t love a dip in a heated pool at a gym, hotel, or health club? Pools are great year round, but sometimes it gets a little too cold to swim in outdoor, non-heated pools. If you are a lucky owner of an indoor pool, this post is for you! If you’re not (yet) the owner of an indoor pool, you may want to get one after reading this!

Perks of indoor pools:

Pool Services

  • Temperature control: The weather is less likely to affect the temperature of an indoor pool. It may be easier to monitor and maintain temperatures during weather shifts.
  • Debris: While all pools can be victims of debris, indoor pools are less likely to have plant and animal debris from neighboring areas. Debris will still happen, but it’s a much more controlled environment.
  • Year round: A lot of indoor pools are open year round, especially for gyms, health spas, and other related uses. Water aerobics, therapy pools, lap swimming, and general fun can be had in an indoor pool.
  • Sunburn: Unless you have large windows in the pool room, sunburns are much less likely while swimming in an indoor pool.

Downsides:

  • Cost: It can be more expensive to install an indoor pool—especially if you already have the building set up. Building the walls around the pool may be easier—depending on the type of pool.
  • Maintenance: Most indoor pools are heated much more than outdoor pools, especially in the cooler months. Cleaning and other maintenance will need to be done as often as outdoor pools.
  • Less natural light: Sunshine can heat your outdoor pool (to a degree) and it’s nice to sunbathe in the natural sun when you’re poolside outside.
  • Social: Indoor pools are more often seen as serious. Hotels with business guests wanting to swim laps aren’t going to be too happy to see a family of 5 show up with their kids wanting to splash around—but if it’s a personal pool that’s not a problem!

All pools are awesome! Both indoor and outdoor pools have their perks and downsides, much like above-ground and in-ground pools have their positive and negative aspects. No matter what type or pool or hot tub you have, Pool Daddy can help you keep it clean and in proper working condition.

All pools will require regular cleaning, pH balancing, wall and floor cleaning, vacuuming, filter cleaning, shock treatments, and other basic maintenance functions. Lucky for you, Pool Daddy in Arizona knows what needs to be done and when. Give us a call to start scheduling weekly pool services or give us a call to have us walk you through what you should be doing regularly to keep your indoor pool open year round!

Winterize Pool

Tags :

Do I Have To Winterize Pool?

Do I have to Winterize Pool?

A lot of pool owners in Arizona use their pools year round—especially those who swim regularly for exercise. If you are one of those who wish to keep their pool open throughout the Autumn and Winter, we can help you out with that. With limited nights below freezing (or close to it), it’s usually very safe to keep your pool open, as long as you don’t neglect your regular care regimen.

Pools often get a little colder in the winter. While there are ways to heat it up, a lot of pool owners choose not to drain or winterize pool, but don’t use it when the water gets colder. Some do this on the off chance they’ll use it, and some just choose to keep up with the regular routine.

One of the hardest parts of keeping your pool open year round is maintaining the pH. The pH can increase much quicker when the temperatures drop, meaning you may have to alter the levels more frequently, and you’re more prone to stains popping up in your pool. Keeping these levels at their target range will make it much easier to get back into your pool in the Spring. Testing the levels once a week is recommended. Pool Daddy can provide these weekly services for you, just as we do in the Spring and summer! If you do choose to maintain your pool on your own, having a professional double check every month or so may be beneficial, as the sensitive equipment we use may be harder to come by commercially. We also may notice some trends you are missing, which can cause problems down the line.

Do I Have To Winterize Pool?

Keep stains at by with regular skimming, brushing, vacuuming, and by keeping your skimmer baskets and filters clean. When this is neglected, stains and algae can run rampant, causing you more problems down the line. Take a little time out of your schedule every week or so to do some cleaning—or hire the professionals and stay warmer inside while we do our job.

If you are one of the lucky ones who either have a heating option (or you’re a dare devil and like your pool a little chilly), it’s incredibly important to make sure your pH levels and alkalinity are where they need to be, in order to keep you healthy. A clean pool is a happy pool, and a clean pool means happy swimmers. Keep an eye on your equipment and chemical balance to ensure you don’t have to have an emergency acid wash this Spring! If you need an acid washing, we can help with that, but   you don’t want to feel the need to get it done every year.

Keep Your Pool Clear—Not Green

Green Pool in Scottsdale

As cool as this could look for Halloween, don’t let it stay green too long! Regular cleaning is a must.

If you’ve decided to keep your pool open a little longer, or you just want to continue to brush up on your pool knowledge, you’ve come to the right place! No one wants to swim in a green pool! Keeping your pool clean and clear is a great way to keep the pool health where it needs to be to save you money in the long run! Today we’ll go over some tips on keeping the green at bay.

  1. Regular cleaning: This should be obvious, but it’s a great reminder. You need to do more than check the PH and use a skimmer. Scrubbing the sides and floor of the pool are important.
  2. Circulation: Keeping the water circulating with efficient and pristine condition pumps and skimmers is very important for pool health. If your pool is starting to turn green or you notice some algae growth you may want to have the pumps, skimmer, filters, and skimmer baskets checked. They may be in poor repair or you may need to replace some equipment and upgrade.
  3. Filters: Regular cleaning and backwashing (as suggested by the filter manufacturer) is important to ensure it’s working properly.
  4. pH levels: Keeping the right chlorine levels in your pool is your first line of defense against algae. Even if your pool is closed for the off season you need to ensure the pH is at the right level to keep it clean. Regular shocking of your pool may be needed in some areas and at certain times of year.
  5. Algaecide: While you may not need to add algaecide as often as you add chlorine it’s a good idea to use it regularly. The entire purpose is to kill algae. Granted, that’s what chlorine does, but not all algae is killed by chlorine.
  6. Proper closing: Closing your pool for the off season is about more than just putting a cover on it. If it’s not clean when you close it, it will be worse when you open it. The chemicals needed for the off season are different than during the rest of the year.
  7. Remove/Stop phosphates: Phosphates are basically food for algae! This can get in your pool through plant debris, dust, body oils, and more. Keeping your pool clean and at the proper chemical levels is very helpful in this, but sometimes you may want to get a commercial product to eliminate the algae food!
  8. Acid Washing: When left unchecked, a green pool may need an acid wash. Eventually, nearly all pools need an acid wash—regardless of how thoroughly they clean the pool. If you can’t keep the green at bay an acid wash may be your best answer.
  9. Don’t be afraid to ask for help: Pool ownership can be hard, so we’re here to help! We offer weekly services, one-time services, emergency services, and more. We’re here for you for all of your pool needs from the basic to the complex.

Halloween Pool Party: Good Idea This November

Tags :

Halloween Pool PartyHalloween Pool Party

We’ve talked a bit this Fall about whether you should Winterize your pool or not. You still have a few months to decide if you’re considering closing it down for the actual winter. Fall is here to stay for a couple months, so if you plan on winterizing for just Winter, we’d love to give you some ideas on how to use your pool and give tips on keeping it clean and working properly until you shut it down (if you do).

We’re a few days into October, and social media is filled with people getting ready for Halloween. “It’s the 4th day of Halloween,” some of your more Halloween obsessed friends may be saying. Let’s plan an amazing Halloween Pool  Party that people will be talking about for years, with a little help from your pool, hot tub, or Jacuzzi.

If you love Haunted houses, what better way to add some flare than to make your pool look like a foggy swamp (with dry ice or a fog machine) or throw in some sea monster decorations or fake corpses. You could even have people jumping in and out of the pool in interesting creepy costumes. Or you could drain your hot tub and have some fake limbs coming out of the cover, or have someone pop out while guests are being led past it! The possibilities are endless. In fact, even if you’ve closed your pool or hot tub for the year, you could incorporate many ideas into a haunted house.

If you’re not as fond of the jump scares, gore, and creepy costumes, you could throw a great Halloween Pool Party and invite people to take a dip in your pool or warm up in the Jacuzzi. Be careful with that, however. Someone may want to show up in a full costume and want to take a dip. We’d recommend you inform guests that it’s best if no one wearing a costume or makeup gets in the pool. Put up some Halloween decorations, get some pumpkin-colored beach balls or some spooky pool toys and go nuts.

Halloween Pool Party

As cool as this could look for Halloween, don’t let it stay green too long! Regular cleaning is a must.

No matter what you do this Halloween, be safe. If you’re involving your pool, hot tub, or Jacuzzi, be warned that you may want to have a thorough cleaning after the party to remove any candy wrappers, food debris, costume pieces, and other Halloween related trash, gunk, or junk. We offer weekly services as well as non-scheduled cleaning and maintenance to suit your needs.

We hope you have a wonderful Autumn. If you’re keeping your pool open, don’t neglect it. You may need to do just as much work in the Fall as you do in the Summer. Pool Daddy is here to answer questions and help you keep your pool clean and in the best working condition it can be in.

Pool Winterization Is Important

Tags :

Why Is Pool Winterization Important? Why Is Pool Winterization Important?

A lot of pool owners live in areas in which the temperatures stay fairly stable year round. Arizona is one of those states where you may not think to winterize your pool. However, it may be in your best interest to shut it down and winterize it for the off season. Below we’ll talk about some reasons you may need to fully winterize your pool.

  1. Lack of use: If you don’t plan on using your pool year round, full pool winterization may be in order. If you plan on using your pool throughout Fall and Winter, you may be able to get by without fully shutting the pool down, and you do not have to drain it. Properly winterizing your pool reduces what you need to do weekly or monthly to keep it in working condition for the Spring or Summer.
  2. Temperature: Here in the desert, it can get very cold (even rare below-freezing temperatures in some areas). Properly winterizing your pool will keep pipes from bursting or other problems from arising due to decreased temperatures once the sun goes down.
  3. Save money: If you’re only using your pool a few times throughout the off-season, you don’t need to be spending all of that time and money maintaining your pool. It’s up to you if the weekly maintenance, chemical testing, and cleaning are worth it to keep it open year round, but if you know the monthly cost of running your pool, you may want to close it for the months you won’t be using it.
  4. Save Time: Most of the time, once a pool is winterized, you don’t have to think about it until you want to open it back up. It may be wise to check the levels periodically to make sure the pool winterization kit is doing the job.

Why Is Pool Winterization Important? If you need your pool winterized this season, give us a call. Our team of professionals will get it done quickly and correctly so you can start focusing on Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

In the meantime, use your pool as often as you can, and don’t neglect it. We have weekly pool services available for all of our customers at affordable prices. Commercial Pool Maintenance and Services

Commercial Pool Maintenance and Services

Dust rolling in towards the swimming pool on a stormy Phoenix summer evening.

Commercial Pool Maintenance and Services

Many homes in Arizona are equipped with beautiful pools and hot tubs, but many residents rely on commercial pools, community pools, therapy pools, and gym swimming and recreation areas to get their swimming, soaking, and water exercising fix. This week we’ll discuss why it’s important to have regular maintenance performed on your commercial pool or public pool.

If people are paying to use your pool, you need to keep it clean and in working order. A pool which does not have all of the elements working properly can lead to health concerns, hazards, and other costly problems. With many daily users, proper cleaning becomes vital and it can be more time consuming than cleaning a residential pool. Having your pool regularly cleaned and your equipment checked will keep your guests safe and your elements (heater, pumps, filters, etc.) working properly, prolonging their lifetime.

Pools are a great way to improve the value of a rental property (if there is a community pool or complex pool) so, keeping it open as long as possible during the year is beneficial to tenant happiness and rent costs. Keeping your pool in great working order will keep tenants happier and more eager to pay a little more to be able to access the pool. This can also work for hotels and gyms.

Water is a great tool to aid exercise. The resistance water provides is great for aerobic activities, muscle development, relaxation, and physical therapy. Hot tubs or other related hot-water elements are great for physical therapy and relaxation. Having these is a great way to help out patients in a hospital or care facility and it’s a great addition to a gym.

Public or community pools (like at recreation or senior centers) are a great way to keep kids out of trouble and provide safe fun for families. Opening the pool and closing it at the appropriate times of the year will help keep everything running smoothly and regular maintenance will decrease the work needed to open and close it every year.

Hiring a professional pool cleaning and maintenance company is a great way to ensure everything is running smoothly. Hiring a maintenance crew for general work at any facility is helpful, but unless they have training dealing with pools, hot tubs, spas, and Jacuzzis, they may not be able to properly backwash filters, check for cracks, or service the heaters and pumps. Hiring regular professionals to work on your pool is the best way to protect your investment so your guests can enjoy it for years to come. We offer pool opening and closing services, emergency services, and weekly pool cleaning and maintenance. Call today to schedule a visit.

Pool Cleaning Above Ground Tips: A Reminder

If you have an above ground pool, you may feel as if we at Pool Daddy AZ don’t talk much about you. We respect each and every one of our customers (and potential customers) so we’d like to spend some time helping out our above ground pool owners! These pool options are awesome for leasing a home, or if you’re unsure if you want to commit to an in-ground pool or if you are not zoned for such construction. These types of pools come in as many (if not more) styles as their in-ground counterparts, so let’s get to talk about the nitty-gritty: Cleaning. So let’s get to talking about important steps in keeping that pool of yours clean!

  1. Pumps and filters: As with any other type of pool, keeping your pump and filter running smoothly is the most important step. These circulate your water and push it through the filter, so if any part of that process isn’t working properly the cleanliness of your pool will suffer. Follow your pool pump instructions, but remember that most filters work best when run between 8 and 12 hours per day, and ensure the water is moving consistently.
  2. Skimmer: Use a pool skimmer or other net-like tools to remove debris so it won’t clog your pumps or filters.
  3. Clean Filters: It’s important to clean your filters by backwashing them when the pressure gets too high. Cartridge filters can often be cleaned by rinsing with a garden hose after removal, but the cartridge (as with filter sand) will need to be replaced eventually.
  4. Brushing and vacuuming: Once a week it’s important to brush and vacuum the pool walls to prevent algae build up.
  5. Testing and Chemicals: Keeping your chlorine and pH levels at the appropriate levels will keep everything working together.
  6. Shocking and Green Pool Clean up: Through basic use, things like debris, sunscreen, sweat, hair products, and other contaminants can cause irritation to swimmers. Shocking the pool regularly (once every week or so) will keep algae at bay and keep the pool clean. Algae growth when left unchecked can lead to green water and unsafe swimming conditions. Using an algaecide regularly is yet another way to keep algae at bay. Performing these tasks when the water has already become green, alongside regular circulation and normal pool cleaning procedures will help return the pool to its beautiful glory.

Much of the maintenance of an above-ground pool is similar to in-ground units, with the exception of certain heating units and extreme cleaning measures. Resurfacing is not done on these units, seeing as the main unit costs significantly less than in-ground pools. Replacing your above-ground unit isn’t an exorbitant expense, especially if you keep your filters and pumps!

If you have an above ground pool and want some help getting your above-green pool clean or you’re experiencing something you’re not used to, let us know. We offer weekly services as well as emergency services and one-time assistance. Any problem you encounter with your pool, we can help you with it.

Labor Day Pool Party 2015: Make Plans Now!

Labor Day Pool Party 2015: Make Plans Now!Labor Day Pool Party 2015: Make Plans Now!

If you’re already using our weekly pool services you may want to go ahead and start planning that Labor Day Pool Party for the weekend! If you don’t already use our services, we offer one-time or semi-regular services which can help you get ready for your Labor Day Pool Party. Invite your friends, family members, and/or coworkers for some fun in the sun by the pool. Work on your tan a little more before you have to go back to work in the stuffy office, store, restaurant, or whatever you do. Get some of the kid’s energy out to help them settle into going back to school! Be the talk of the town because your Labor Day Pool Party must have cost a fortune or taken months of planning, when, in reality, it was easy as pie! Today we’ll talk about just how easy it can be to get ready for a Labor Day Pool Party, from pool maintenance to low-maintenance decorations and preparation.

  1. Get your pool ready: If you’re throwing a Labor Day Pool Party, it’s important to make sure your pool is clean, safe, and looking great. Ask our technicians to check any electrical components for light shortages, loose wires, or old and outdated equipment. A new pump or filter may just push your pool over the edge in high efficiency, making your party run smoothly and keeping you ready for a last-minute party (like a Day-Before-Labor-Day-Gathering). Small changes in your equipment or chemical levels can keep your pool clean and ready for even the pickiest of swimmers.
  2. Keep your skimmers empty, filters clean, and your nets handy: Depending on what your party will entail, cleaning our filters and skimmer baskets before the party will keep them from clogging from falling food, fireworks, and debris. Keep your pool nets handy in case someone drops a plate, cup, piece of food, or other item that can get stuck in the baskets or just make people question your pools cleanliness.
  3. Simplicity in design: You don’t need to decorate your whole home for a Labor Day Pool Party! Add a simple balloon or small sign at your front door, fence gate, or mail box to direct people where to go, and you can reuse some of your 4th Of July decorations for this party! Labor Day is about patriotism as well as recognizing the hard work we all do! Throw out some red, white, and blue decorations. You can usually find patriotic themed plates, banners, silverware, serving trays, and more cheap at your local party store this time of year—so don’t be afraid of getting some basic “Independence Day” items to keep you on a budget.
  4. Grill and Pot luck: The work shouldn’t just be on you, encourage everyone to bring a small dish or the drinks, silverware, charcoal, chips, etc. Have everyone contribute in the true fashion of Labor Day so no one gets over worked.
  5. Keep the pool clean before, during, and after: Weekly maintenance up until the party will ensure everything is running smooth, but keeping harmful debris out of the pool and cleaning the pool well soon after the party will keep your pool looking, smelling, and operating to perfection.

Ask us about weekly, monthly, one-time, or emergency maintenance and we’ll help you get and keep your pool clean through Labor Day and beyond!

Call Pool Daddy now for your Labor Day Pool Party plans..
