Pool Services – Common Pool Problems and Concerns

Tags :

Pool Services

As cool as this could look for Halloween, don’t let it stay green too long! Regular cleaning is a must.

Pool Services

We’d like to take some time during the pool off-season to just brush up on some pool services information, refresh your memory on some things we’ve discussed in the distant past, and keep you up to date on pool services maintenance ideas, terms, and more. Today we’re going to talk about some of the most common problems pool owners come across, with brief explanations as to how the problem is addressed.

  1. Discolored water: Pool water can change color with a bunch of different causes. A hazy or cloudy pool can be caused by poor water circulation, problems with the filter, water balance issues, high alkalinity, low sanitizer level, calcium build up, high levels of total dissolved solids, and the presence of too much organic waste. Most of these issues are handled with adjusting the levels of chemicals and other such products, including shocking your pool.
  2. Green Water: Green water is a common problem, which means algae is growing in the pool. Shocking the pool can be a solution to this problem if you catch it early, but adding algae killers, scrubbing the walls and floor, and cleaning out the residue can also help. For extreme cases, acid washing may need to happen.
  3. Black spots: Black algae isn’t as common as their green relative. It’s much harder to get rid of and it appears in small patches, so it’s easy to miss. Purchasing and using special algae killer designed for that is your first level of defense.
  4. Pink growth: Bacteria growth like this is remedied with shocking the pool (usually twice) and then extra algaecide is used for 2 or more days.
  5. Yellow or green dust: Mustard algae can occur in some pools, and shocking your pool is the best way to remove it, with the addition of special algaecide designed to kill mustard algae after the shock.
  6. Correcting chlorine and pH levels: If your pool has too much chlorine, stop adding it until the levels balance out or add a neutralizer. For pH levels, you may need to adjust the chlorine levels, decrease alkalinity, or increase alkalinity. There are products available to fix all of those problems.
  7. Sudsy water: Too much algaecide can cause the pool water to start foaming. There are non-foaming brands out there, so switching to that and replacing some water in your pool can remedy this issue.
  8. Salty water: If your total dissolved solids levels are too high and your pool is salty, you need to drain the pool (up to half way) and replace the water.
  9. Water burns eyes or skin: If the pH levels of your pool are off (too high OR too low) it can cause irritation to the eyes or skin of swimmers. The culprit may also be an excess of sanitizer. Checking the levels of your pool regularly can help prevent this from becoming a regular problem.

Holiday Pool Style: Unwind With a Hot Tub

Holiday Pool Style: Unwind With A Hot Tub

Holiday Pool

This time next week we’ll be eating Thanksgiving leftovers, still fighting crowds for Thanksgiving Weekend sale prices, or recovering from Black Friday shopping. Unwind the best way possible with your hot tub, indoor pool, or Jacuzzi. From the infinity pools to your basic above ground Jacuzzi, warm or hot water can be the best way to relax after holiday stress. Keep your water-based-stress-saver running smoothly with our help! Regular cleaning, checks, and maintenance will help keep your hot tub working from now until New Year’s (and beyond).

To encourage you to keep your hot tub or Jacuzzi (or even a heated pool) through Winter, we’d like to remind you of just how much better your life can be when these units are working.

  1. Stress Management: Exercise is a great way to manage stress, so if your pool is still open you may want to consider going for a swim before or after spending hours in the kitchen making a meal or after you spend hours shopping for the best Christmas presents. Hot tubs are great to loosen up those tense muscles and calm your nerves from the in-laws or screaming kids at the mall.
  2. Stay fit: If your pool is still open (and comfortable enough to swim in during these cooler months) you may want to keep up with your swimming regiment during the holidays! We all know we’re prone to overeating and eating comfort foods, sweets, snacks, and more at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Don’t let yourself fall out of shape, use your pool to your advantage if you haven’t closed it for the season.
  3. Easy Entertainment: While the kids are playing with their new toys or their friends and cousins, some of the adults could easily slip away to the hot tub and have a glass of punch and share some stories that are less-than-fit around certain family members. Or, you can share great memories while letting the water jets and bubbles relax you all, making great memories.

No matter what you do this Thanksgiving (and Christmas) holiday, don’t let your pool or hot tub fall into disrepair. If you neglect these investments, you’ll be paying much more in the future to have them repaired. Keep up with your maintenance effortlessly by scheduling weekly (or other regular) maintenance with your favorite pool company, Pool Daddy! We’d love to help take that stress of “did I clean my pool this week?” or “I that a leak in my Jacuzzi?” off of your shoulders this holiday season. Give us a call or check out our Contact Us page to talk about any question, comments, or concerns you have about your pool, hot tub, Jacuzzi, or other water feature you may have on your property.

Happy Thanksgiving, and enjoy your holiday pool style everyone.

Pool Services – Indoor Pool : Perks, Care, and More

Tags :

Pool Services – Indoor Pool

Who doesn’t love a dip in a heated pool at a gym, hotel, or health club? Pools are great year round, but sometimes it gets a little too cold to swim in outdoor, non-heated pools. If you are a lucky owner of an indoor pool, this post is for you! If you’re not (yet) the owner of an indoor pool, you may want to get one after reading this!

Perks of indoor pools:

Pool Services

  • Temperature control: The weather is less likely to affect the temperature of an indoor pool. It may be easier to monitor and maintain temperatures during weather shifts.
  • Debris: While all pools can be victims of debris, indoor pools are less likely to have plant and animal debris from neighboring areas. Debris will still happen, but it’s a much more controlled environment.
  • Year round: A lot of indoor pools are open year round, especially for gyms, health spas, and other related uses. Water aerobics, therapy pools, lap swimming, and general fun can be had in an indoor pool.
  • Sunburn: Unless you have large windows in the pool room, sunburns are much less likely while swimming in an indoor pool.

Downsides:

  • Cost: It can be more expensive to install an indoor pool—especially if you already have the building set up. Building the walls around the pool may be easier—depending on the type of pool.
  • Maintenance: Most indoor pools are heated much more than outdoor pools, especially in the cooler months. Cleaning and other maintenance will need to be done as often as outdoor pools.
  • Less natural light: Sunshine can heat your outdoor pool (to a degree) and it’s nice to sunbathe in the natural sun when you’re poolside outside.
  • Social: Indoor pools are more often seen as serious. Hotels with business guests wanting to swim laps aren’t going to be too happy to see a family of 5 show up with their kids wanting to splash around—but if it’s a personal pool that’s not a problem!

All pools are awesome! Both indoor and outdoor pools have their perks and downsides, much like above-ground and in-ground pools have their positive and negative aspects. No matter what type or pool or hot tub you have, Pool Daddy can help you keep it clean and in proper working condition.

All pools will require regular cleaning, pH balancing, wall and floor cleaning, vacuuming, filter cleaning, shock treatments, and other basic maintenance functions. Lucky for you, Pool Daddy in Arizona knows what needs to be done and when. Give us a call to start scheduling weekly pool services or give us a call to have us walk you through what you should be doing regularly to keep your indoor pool open year round!

Winterize Pool

Tags :

Do I Have To Winterize Pool?

Do I have to Winterize Pool?

A lot of pool owners in Arizona use their pools year round—especially those who swim regularly for exercise. If you are one of those who wish to keep their pool open throughout the Autumn and Winter, we can help you out with that. With limited nights below freezing (or close to it), it’s usually very safe to keep your pool open, as long as you don’t neglect your regular care regimen.

Pools often get a little colder in the winter. While there are ways to heat it up, a lot of pool owners choose not to drain or winterize pool, but don’t use it when the water gets colder. Some do this on the off chance they’ll use it, and some just choose to keep up with the regular routine.

One of the hardest parts of keeping your pool open year round is maintaining the pH. The pH can increase much quicker when the temperatures drop, meaning you may have to alter the levels more frequently, and you’re more prone to stains popping up in your pool. Keeping these levels at their target range will make it much easier to get back into your pool in the Spring. Testing the levels once a week is recommended. Pool Daddy can provide these weekly services for you, just as we do in the Spring and summer! If you do choose to maintain your pool on your own, having a professional double check every month or so may be beneficial, as the sensitive equipment we use may be harder to come by commercially. We also may notice some trends you are missing, which can cause problems down the line.

Do I Have To Winterize Pool?

Keep stains at by with regular skimming, brushing, vacuuming, and by keeping your skimmer baskets and filters clean. When this is neglected, stains and algae can run rampant, causing you more problems down the line. Take a little time out of your schedule every week or so to do some cleaning—or hire the professionals and stay warmer inside while we do our job.

If you are one of the lucky ones who either have a heating option (or you’re a dare devil and like your pool a little chilly), it’s incredibly important to make sure your pH levels and alkalinity are where they need to be, in order to keep you healthy. A clean pool is a happy pool, and a clean pool means happy swimmers. Keep an eye on your equipment and chemical balance to ensure you don’t have to have an emergency acid wash this Spring! If you need an acid washing, we can help with that, but   you don’t want to feel the need to get it done every year.

Pool Winterization for Above-Ground Pools

Tags :

Pool WinterizationPool Winterization

Winter is coming! Well, Fall is coming first, but it’s never too early to think about pool winterization. We’ve discussed pool winterization before, with a focus on in-ground pools. Today we’ll talk about winterizing the above-ground pool. A lot of people just choose to drain their above-ground pools for the winter, but that can be damaging to the pool walls and it can be hard to do for pols which have been installed into decks. Some above-ground pools are designed to be taken down and stored, but the high quality ones are still a semi-permanent fixture on your property, so we’ll be focusing on those styles of pools.

Steps of Pool Winterization for Above-Ground Pool

  1. Balance: Balance your pool chemicals as you would for any other weekly or biweekly balancing. Make sure all of your chlorine and pH levels are at optimal levels to keep your equipment working properly.
  2. Debris: Vacuum or scrub debris off of your pool walls and floor. Getting it as clean as possible will make it easier to open back up in the Spring or Summer.
  3. Shock: Once the pool is clean you may want to shock it to kill any remaining algae. Measure out the amount of shock chemicals as needed per the volume of your pool.
  4. Chemicals: Pools need specific chemicals for Winter. Once the pool is clean and shocked, add the specific chemicals to further prevent algae growth. Run all systems for at least one cycle (usually up to 6 hours) to ensure the winterizing chemicals get through the filter sufficiently and the chemicals are properly spread throughout the pool.
  5. Pool WinterizationIn areas where ice is a problem, there are further steps to be taken to ensure no ice enters the system. Generally, the ice equalizer needs to be filled with up wo 2/3 air to ensure air doesn’t leave the system. Winter tabs are then added (per the directions on the individual product).
  6. Water Level: The water level must be lowered below the return line and the filter is to be disconnected and taken to a climate controlled area. Other equipment like skimmer and return fitting may require additional protection to prevent water damage in the off season.
  7. Cover: It is important to cover your now-winterized pool. Most covers feature cover clips, but other options may be available for your size and shape of pool. Proper cover will ensure your pool is as clean as possible throughout the winter.

If you have any questions or concerns about winterizing your pool, contact Pool Daddy and we can help you out. We also offer weekly services as well as emergency services for all of your above-ground and in-ground pools, as well as hot tubs and Jacuzzis!

Try these pool winterization tips!

Clean out the pool.

Balance the water chemistry.

Don’t let your chemicals damage your pool.

The #1 enemy: freezing

Be good to your pump and heater

No water in the pipes = no freeze damage

Clean the filter.

Your final freeze insurance: the flotation device

Last step: The winter cover.

Pool Services for Labor Day

Pool Services for Labor Day

LLast Chance for Labor Day Pool Servicesabor Day is about a week away, so if you’re planning one last pool party before Autumn hits, now’s your chance! Labor Day tends to be the last big day for cookouts, barbeques, and big outdoor celebrations before everyone starts focusing on school, work, and working towards Christmas! Let’s get those pools in tip top shape for one last shindig before winterization!

If you’ve been using our weekly pool services, your pool may already be ready for a beautiful day of swimming, partying, and tanning. If you do most of your own pool maintenance, first of all we’re impressed, and second of all, you may want to get your equipment checked by a professional to ensure everything is running as it needs to in order to keep friends, family, and neighbors safe.

Things to look out for when hosting a party:

  1. Electrical Work: From lights to pumps and filters, everything is connected to a power source. It’s important to make sure all of your electrical work is running properly for maximum safety. The last thing anyone needs is a last minute electrical problem in a pool! As we know, water and direct electrical current don’t mix!
  2. Algae: The green slime that collects on your pool walls and floor is unsightly and feels weird, but it can also be a health risk! Much like mold and other growth, it’s not safe to get into direct contact with this stuff—especially if it gets ingested! Make sure your filters and pumps are running at optimum levels to reduce the algae growth. Regular pool wall cleanings are also an important step in preventing this growth.
  3. Chemicals: A pool with off balanced levels can harbor algae growth, but it can also easily irritate the skin of your swimmers. Regular use of your pool can alter the levels due to body lotions, hair care products, sun screen, and other contaminants which can alter your pH levels. Plants and dirt getting into your pool can also affect the chemical levels. This is why we recommend weekly chlorine, pH and other chemical testing. Besides swimmer comfort, imbalanced levels can affect your equipment as well.
  4. Efficiency: Filters which need to be replaced, cleaned, or back washed may be working extra hard to do their job or it will eventually cause damage to the filter system or lead to harmful algae growth before you know it! Outdated pumps and heaters can also decrease efficiency—especially of the power efficiency kind! Keeping up to date with equipment can save money in the long run and decrease your power usage (and carbon footprint!).

Give us a call for a pool services or to schedule weekly visits between now and winterization. Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here and you’ll be rushing to get your pool shut down for the season.

Pool Cleaning Above Ground Tips: A Reminder

If you have an above ground pool, you may feel as if we at Pool Daddy AZ don’t talk much about you. We respect each and every one of our customers (and potential customers) so we’d like to spend some time helping out our above ground pool owners! These pool options are awesome for leasing a home, or if you’re unsure if you want to commit to an in-ground pool or if you are not zoned for such construction. These types of pools come in as many (if not more) styles as their in-ground counterparts, so let’s get to talk about the nitty-gritty: Cleaning. So let’s get to talking about important steps in keeping that pool of yours clean!

  1. Pumps and filters: As with any other type of pool, keeping your pump and filter running smoothly is the most important step. These circulate your water and push it through the filter, so if any part of that process isn’t working properly the cleanliness of your pool will suffer. Follow your pool pump instructions, but remember that most filters work best when run between 8 and 12 hours per day, and ensure the water is moving consistently.
  2. Skimmer: Use a pool skimmer or other net-like tools to remove debris so it won’t clog your pumps or filters.
  3. Clean Filters: It’s important to clean your filters by backwashing them when the pressure gets too high. Cartridge filters can often be cleaned by rinsing with a garden hose after removal, but the cartridge (as with filter sand) will need to be replaced eventually.
  4. Brushing and vacuuming: Once a week it’s important to brush and vacuum the pool walls to prevent algae build up.
  5. Testing and Chemicals: Keeping your chlorine and pH levels at the appropriate levels will keep everything working together.
  6. Shocking and Green Pool Clean up: Through basic use, things like debris, sunscreen, sweat, hair products, and other contaminants can cause irritation to swimmers. Shocking the pool regularly (once every week or so) will keep algae at bay and keep the pool clean. Algae growth when left unchecked can lead to green water and unsafe swimming conditions. Using an algaecide regularly is yet another way to keep algae at bay. Performing these tasks when the water has already become green, alongside regular circulation and normal pool cleaning procedures will help return the pool to its beautiful glory.

Much of the maintenance of an above-ground pool is similar to in-ground units, with the exception of certain heating units and extreme cleaning measures. Resurfacing is not done on these units, seeing as the main unit costs significantly less than in-ground pools. Replacing your above-ground unit isn’t an exorbitant expense, especially if you keep your filters and pumps!

If you have an above ground pool and want some help getting your above-green pool clean or you’re experiencing something you’re not used to, let us know. We offer weekly services as well as emergency services and one-time assistance. Any problem you encounter with your pool, we can help you with it.

Labor Day Pool Party 2015: Make Plans Now!

Labor Day Pool Party 2015: Make Plans Now!Labor Day Pool Party 2015: Make Plans Now!

If you’re already using our weekly pool services you may want to go ahead and start planning that Labor Day Pool Party for the weekend! If you don’t already use our services, we offer one-time or semi-regular services which can help you get ready for your Labor Day Pool Party. Invite your friends, family members, and/or coworkers for some fun in the sun by the pool. Work on your tan a little more before you have to go back to work in the stuffy office, store, restaurant, or whatever you do. Get some of the kid’s energy out to help them settle into going back to school! Be the talk of the town because your Labor Day Pool Party must have cost a fortune or taken months of planning, when, in reality, it was easy as pie! Today we’ll talk about just how easy it can be to get ready for a Labor Day Pool Party, from pool maintenance to low-maintenance decorations and preparation.

  1. Get your pool ready: If you’re throwing a Labor Day Pool Party, it’s important to make sure your pool is clean, safe, and looking great. Ask our technicians to check any electrical components for light shortages, loose wires, or old and outdated equipment. A new pump or filter may just push your pool over the edge in high efficiency, making your party run smoothly and keeping you ready for a last-minute party (like a Day-Before-Labor-Day-Gathering). Small changes in your equipment or chemical levels can keep your pool clean and ready for even the pickiest of swimmers.
  2. Keep your skimmers empty, filters clean, and your nets handy: Depending on what your party will entail, cleaning our filters and skimmer baskets before the party will keep them from clogging from falling food, fireworks, and debris. Keep your pool nets handy in case someone drops a plate, cup, piece of food, or other item that can get stuck in the baskets or just make people question your pools cleanliness.
  3. Simplicity in design: You don’t need to decorate your whole home for a Labor Day Pool Party! Add a simple balloon or small sign at your front door, fence gate, or mail box to direct people where to go, and you can reuse some of your 4th Of July decorations for this party! Labor Day is about patriotism as well as recognizing the hard work we all do! Throw out some red, white, and blue decorations. You can usually find patriotic themed plates, banners, silverware, serving trays, and more cheap at your local party store this time of year—so don’t be afraid of getting some basic “Independence Day” items to keep you on a budget.
  4. Grill and Pot luck: The work shouldn’t just be on you, encourage everyone to bring a small dish or the drinks, silverware, charcoal, chips, etc. Have everyone contribute in the true fashion of Labor Day so no one gets over worked.
  5. Keep the pool clean before, during, and after: Weekly maintenance up until the party will ensure everything is running smooth, but keeping harmful debris out of the pool and cleaning the pool well soon after the party will keep your pool looking, smelling, and operating to perfection.

Ask us about weekly, monthly, one-time, or emergency maintenance and we’ll help you get and keep your pool clean through Labor Day and beyond!

Call Pool Daddy now for your Labor Day Pool Party plans..

Swimming Pool For Fall Preparation?

Tags :

Swimming Pool For Fall Preparation?Swimming Pool For Fall?

We’re in the last half of summer, so it might be time to start discussing fall preparations for your swimming pool. While some owners can keep their pool operating throughout the year, but there are a few things you want to keep in mind throughout the end of summer and through fall. Today we’ll talk about some things you may want to consider this season change.

-Early winterization: If you don’t plan on using your swimming pool or hot tub one school starts back because your kids are the main ones using it, getting a jump start on winterization may be a good idea. If it would go otherwise unused, keeping all of the pumps and filters running when the pool isn’t used but once or twice throughout the entire autumn, it may not be worth it. Contact us if you want to winterize your pool because it can be a pain to get every detail correct to prevent damage to your covers or pool itself.

  • Increase skimming: depending on the trees, bushes, and plants in your area, you may experience an increase in debris in your pool.
  • Chemicals: If the temperature drops as noticeable amount it may affect your chemical balancing. Lowered temperatures will mean you need less chlorine to keep the levels at a functioning point. You should still check it weekly, more so if the temperature drops or rises suddenly.
  • If the temperatures drop enough you may be able to decrease the amount of time you run your pumps. Let us know if you feel as if you can alter the time your pump runs and we’ll check it out.
  • Don’t ignore a cleaning schedule. It’s easy to forget to clean your swimming pool, including scrubbing the walls, checking the filters, emptying the baskets, and using a pool vacuum. Especially as your use decreases; if you go from using it daily to only using it on weekends you may lose track of time and when you last cleaned the pool. This is where weekly cleaning comes in handy.

Ask our technicians or a swimming pool specialist about any chemicals you may want to add in your slightly-off season. Some things you may want to consider or adjust may be minor, others may take a little more work, so call today and ask about seasonal changes you need to keep in mind for your swimming pool, hot tub, or Jacuzzi.

Whatever you do at the end of this summer, stay safe, consult your swimming pool technicians, and have fun. Don’t let cooler weather ruin your fun because you can still use your pool, especially in such warm a warm climate like that found in Arizona. We get so much sunshine, many swimming pool owners keep their pool open year round—with the help of our employees at Pool Daddy.
