Green Pool? Here’s Why And How To Fix it!

Green Pool ? Here’s Why And How To Fix it!

Green Pool in ScottsdaleAny time you suspect there’s a problem with your pool (functions, filtration, aesthetics, and more) you can always call Pool Daddy and we’ll come take a look. Green pools are a common problem and should always be taken care of quickly. Today we’ll talk about how this happens, how you can prevent it, and how it can be fixed once it happens.

Causes: It’s common to open up your pool in the Spring only to find a gross green pool ! Algae is the culprit here, so do not get in the pool until the problem is addressed. Algae loves warm water, especially if it’s still. If your pool is left still for too long (with little water circulation through the filters) it’s likely to get green due to bacteria and algae.

Improper pH balance, clogged filter and weather are all factors to consider as causes of green pool. Improper pH balance leads to the algae and bacteria being able to thrive. Clogged filters keep the culprits from being properly removed (even with good pH levels) and warm water is a breeding ground for gross things.

Treatment: One method of fixing a green pool is a shock treatment. After the sun begins to set (to avoid excess sun exposure which can ruin the treatment), fill a 5-gallon bucket with water and add a bag of shock. Add it to the pool and keep the filter and pump running. Light green pools often needs 2 pounds of shock for every 10,000 gallons of water in the pool. Green to dark green water requires 3 pounds of shock for every 10,000 gallons of pool water. Dark green/black water (think “lagoon”) requires 4 pounds of shock per 10,000 gallons of water. Cloudy blue water is the goal after the shock treatment. Blue or white water means the treatment is working and it will turn gray when all of the algae is dead. Keeping the filter and pump on continuously will remove the dead algae and return the pool to the normal color. Consider checking your filters before starting this treatment (And probably getting them cleaned afterwards).

It is possible to reverse the green effects with regular and thorough cleaning, but the most effective method is the shock treatment.

Green PoolAvoiding the Green Pool Mess: Regular maintenance is the best way to battle green pools. Having the bottom of the pool vacuumed, scrubbing/vacuuming the walls, skimming the surface, cleaning/checking/replacing the filters regularly, and checking the pH and chlorine levels are all ways to prevent green pools (and even fix minor levels of green-pool-syndrome). Pool Daddy will help you set up weekly (or monthly) pool services to make sure all systems are working in harmony to prevent your pool from growing colonies of algae and bacteria. Proper winterization can also prevent the green algae, but even proper winterized pools are at risk.

If you suspect your pool is becoming infested with algae, contact us and we’ll check it out to keep your pool clean and your family swimming in clear beautiful water.

Acid Washing Pools

Acid Washing Pools

Acid WashingWhen pools begin looking slimy and swamp-like, it’s time for a good acid washing. This process is also called “drain and clean.” This removes all traces of algae from improper winterization, neglect, or an algae takeover. What this process does is strip a thin layer of plaster from the pool, exposing fresh and clean surfaces. While acid washing produces a very clean looking pool, having it done too often will lead to a rapid need of re-plastering, so it is not often done every year.

If you are unsure as to what type of clean your pool needs, here’s a tip; if you can see to the bottom of the pool a good chemical and filtering clean should do the trick. If the water is dark enough to where you cannot see the pool floor there is nothing to do besides an acid wash because the cost of chemicals and filtering will be higher than the acid cleaning. Acid cleaning is a fairly expensive procedure but it’s well worth it.

Before getting this process done on your pool, contact the city water suppliers to know the proper disposal process of the dirty water and the acid treated water. Your pool cleaning company should know this, but it doesn’t hurt to inform the water board. If you’re lucky, the water company may wave some of the fees of refilling your pool if you give them notice.

Acid cleaning involves Muratic acid and water mixed (acid added to the water). This necessitates appropriate goggles, masks, and hazmat suits, so it’s best to let the technician do his work while you stay at a safe distance. Muratic acid is harmful to a lot of living organisms (hence using it for algae removal) and it must be treated before pumped out of the pool. Soda ash is added to the foamy residue after cleaning to make it safer to pumping and to reduce the risk of the film further stripping the pool surface.

While you can perform this type of clean on your own, the high risk and health concerns make it worth it to call a professional. Hiring a company like Pool Daddy will ensure it’s done safely and correctly and the pool will be ready to use after the algae and cleaning chemicals are fully removed and neutralized. Technicians will also know of the proper disposal procedures to avoid state involvement or harm to the environment.

Of course, it’s best to avoid the need for acid washing your pool. This can be prevented with weekly (or other forms of regular) pool cleaning services provided by Pool Daddy. Let the professionals do the work so you can relax and enjoy your pool. The cost may seem high but it’s better than risking acid exposure or algae-related issues.

Chlorinated Pools vs Saltwater

Chlorinated Pools vs Saltwater

Some people swear up and down that salt water pools are the only way to go because they are free of chlorine and are a healthier option. Others stick to chlorine because they simply don’t like the maintenance and feeling of salt water. Today we’ll discuss both types so you can decide.

Chlorine:

This chemical is what keeps pools clean and bacteria free. Even salt water pools use a little (when the salt breaks down it creates chlorine in small doses). Chlorine breaks down into different chemicals which destroy microorganisms and bacteria by destroying lipids, enzymes, and cell structures. Due to the destructiveness of chlorine, many pool owners worry about the health of their friends, family, children, dogs, and themselves. There is chlorine in all human bodies, but increased levels in the body can become toxic.

Hours after leaving the pool you can still smell chlorine and you feel the difference in your skin, making you rush to a soapy shower or bath.

Chlorinated pools are often cheaper upfront due to the fact that a chlorine generator isn’t needed upfront. However, more maintenance is needed to keep it clean and the amount of chlorine needs to be fairly exact for the best performance (but there are people out there to help with this information).

The chlorine is effective in killing contaminants, but fairly harmless chloramines remain, needing more chlorine to remove them and the chlorine itself can be harmful to skin and eyes.

Committed pool owners with time to maintain the pool (and possibly some money for professional cleaning) are  more than happy to close chlorine for the low cost (not counting maintenance), they are not, however, ideal for those not wanting to perform regular tests and cleaning.

Salt water:

Chlorinated Pools vs Saltwater

Many people assume salt water pools are just like the ocean, but they’re not. The salt levels are much lower. Salt water pools do end up with small levels of chlorine through the electrolysis of the salt water generator.

Chlorine is the smell of summer! Only it doesn’t have to be. Salt water pools do not leave everyone smelling of chlorine and the feeling skin has after a dip in chlorinated water is no longer an issue.  Salt water pool owners often report less stinging of eyes and softer skin after swimming in a salt water pool as opposed to chlorinated one.

Other products like pH balancers may need to be used in these pools, but since salt does not evaporate, it doesn’t need to be added regularly and some people even use basic table salt.

Despite the cleanliness chlorine claims to offer, algae can still be major problems. Luckily, salt water can decrease the build-up of algae, prolonging the life of the pool thanks to the steady stream of chlorine from the electrolysis process.

Converting a pool to salt water from chlorine can be very costly, but it can save money in the long run. Salt water pools need less manual  leaning and fewer chemicals, but generators that use up fairly large amounts of electricity with expensive replacement, parts, and maintenance.

Pool heaters help keep a pool comfortable and refreshing year round! You wouldn’t think much of a pool heater in Arizona, but with those cool nights pools can retain cold temperatures for hours after sunrise. A cold pool may be refreshing in the middle of the summer during the peak temperature hours, but for a nice relaxing afternoon in the pool, slightly heated pools are great, and at night they’re even better a little warmer! We’ll keep your heater working properly so you can use your pool all day, every day if you want. Better yet, have us help with your heating pumps and we’ll hook you up with an amazing system which takes the heat from the outside air and transfers that heat into the water, saving your power system.

Above ground Jacuzzis are a great addition to any home. These require much less initial set up than in ground spas and Jacuzzis. Cleaning, maintenance, repair, setup; Pool Daddy will help you keep your unit running smoothly so you can enjoy it year round.

2012 brought in the new standardization of 2 speed or variable pumps in pools in Arizona. These pumps help keep your pool clean since all water must pass through the filters at some point, keeping contaminants out of your water. If you have not yet upgraded or want to make sure your pump is up to standards and working properly, call Pool Daddy and we’ll help you out. Our technicians know these things inside and out.

Pool DaddyEven with the best filters, your pool will need some cleaning details performed. Tile can become gross over time and even the best at-home cleaning supplies might not help. Our technicians will clean your tile with ease and restore your tile to a sheen you’ll want to show off ASAP. We also offer pressure washing to remove algae, dirt, and bacteria off of tile, walkways, and more. This low-energy consumption method is safe, powerful, and lasting.

Some people opt to have a salt water pool and these work differently than the standard chlorine types. Those who want a touch of the ocean or simply dislike other methods choose salt water and should be aware of the increased amounts of attention they will need. Our technicians are trained in the upkeep and maintenance of these systems as well so you don’t have to stress about whether you should have gone with the more conventional method when problems arise. Call us and we’ll help you prevent any future issues and keep your pool clean.

Finally, whether you’re swimming a few laps before breakfast or relaxing in your spa after dinner, lights in your pool are functional and pleasant. Algae and Bacteria Can Cause Costly Pool Repairs in Scottsdale

Green pools in Scottsdale are full of green algae and bacteria that can cause significant damage to the surfaces of your pool and create costly pool repairs.  Pools often turn green due to unbalanced chemicals.  Pools need to have a proper pH balance to kill bacteria.  Improper pH can cause this bacteria to build up over time and lead to discoloration of your pool water.  If the pH is too low, the water is acidic and over time it will erode the plastic and metal components of your pool causing costly repairs later. A pH that is too high will not kill  bacteria and will allow scale buildup of calcium and minerals on your tile and other surfaces.
